It’s no secret that meal replacement shakes can be an effective way to lose weight and to help keep it off. What To Consider When Selecting a Meal Replacement Shake
So what are the things you need to consider when selecting your shake? There are several key things you want to consider including taste, number of calories, how many grams of protein versus carbs and any additional nutrients that might be included in the shake. Let talk a little about each.
Taste – This one is obviously very subjective. What tastes good to me might not necessarily taste good to you. A shake that has a pleasing taste to you is one that you will consume everyday with a problem. However if you have to force yourself to drink your meal replacement shake than its not going to work for you because eventually you’ll stop using it.
Carbohydrate to Protein Ratio – The number of grams of protein in relation to carbohydrates is of significant importance. When recommending a shake we always suggest a ratio of 1 to 1 or less of carbs to protein. For example if your shake has 24 grams of protein than you’ll want 24 grams or less of carbohydrates.
Calories – The number of calories in your meal replacement shake should be between 200-350 calories. Stay on the low end of that range since anymore calories than that are you are probably not going to gain much benefit from drinking meal replacement shakes.
Fat – You meal replacement shake should have some fat, not a lot but some in order to help you feel full in between meals. 1-3 grams of fat is sufficient.
Additional Nutrients – When selecting a shake try to choose one that has some of the additional nutrients you might not be getting during your normal course of day in order to meet your recommended daily intake of vitamins and minerals.
